Character Facts
by Gabriela Navarez, Period 4
Hello there, welcome to character facts! If you are wondering around and looking for a book to read and cannot find one, try reading “To Kill a Mocking Bird.” This book won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 and the Quill Award for Audio book in 2007. This book is known for its motif. The motif of the story is fear. In our lives, fear sets up our boundaries. In this book, the characters deal with the motif a certain way. Would you like to know who or how? Well I will not tell you exactly, I do not want to spoil anything. I will give you just enough information.
Scout is one of the characters. In this story, Scout is actively the voice of the narrator. She is curious and observant. Sometimes she does not ask questions politely, but she is a kid and she does not mean do it in a harmful way. Like all children, they want to know more about the world they live in. One day she was talking about her father and said “our father did not do anything… he never went hunting, he did not play poker or fish or drink or smoke. He sat in the living room and read.” Well, Scout does speak her mind. She is also a girl who is adventurous and loves to be at her brother’s house. Towards the end of the story, did Scout change?
Jem is another character in the story, since the motif of the story is fear, he brings the opposite, bravery. One of the examples is that when he was younger he would touch a house where a “monster” lived. “in all his life Jem had never declined a dare.” As he grew so many things happened to him so I dare anyone to read more.
Atticus is a character with morals, he treats his children with maturity. He cares for his family and does what is best for them. People would say that “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is in public streets.” He takes no part in racism and believes that everyone should be treated equally.
Bob Ewell and his daughter Mayella are very poor in town. They do not even have education and with this pair we experience death in the story. Mayella becomes an unexpected role in the family. Bob experiences sadness and deals with it in a harmful way. Soon they were taken to court because of Mayella.
Boo Radley is the disturbance in the story. Being that he has no friends. He lives in a house with his mom and dad. He stays inside and barely comes out. People have spread a lot of rumors about him but they do not know the truth.
Tom Robbinson is a man who went through racism and has a family. His family also experiences death by an expected turn. He was brought to court and Mayella is somehow involved. While other people do not help nor respect Mr. Robbinson. There was one man who did his best to support him. Since racism is still going on, we should respect everyone. It is like an apple judging the orange. The apple does not really know that the orange is a relative. In the end they are all fruit.
If you want to know more, read the book you will love it. I did.
