Racist Happenings in Maycomb

by Graeme Horton, Period 3

The trial is a very poignant example of racism in Maycomb. A black man was accused of rape and, even with a pile of evidence pointing out that he was innocent, he was still convicted. Not to mention that the jury was filled with people that were not Robinson's peers. Instead, it was filled with rascist country folk. Also, when Tom ran from prison, he was shot seventeen times when trying to escape, although it would have taken a lot less to down him.

The lynch mob coming to hang Tom Robinson was a very good example of racism in Maycomb because it illustrates what lynch mobs were back then. It shows that people could hang others without a proper trial. It also shows that it was a naturally occurring thing back then because Atticus went and stayed with Tom for the sole purpose of repelling anyone that came to lynch him.

Something that happens a lot in To Kill a Mocking Bird is people calling Atticus trash and such because he laws for Tom Robinson. For example, when Jem and Scout are passing by Mrs. Dubose's house and she says that he isn't any better than the trash that he works for, or, in the schoolyard when someone tells scout that its bad that Atticus is lawing for Robinson.

During the trial when Dill gets sick of seeing Robinson get treated horribly they go outside where they find Dolphus Raymond, a supposed Drunkard. A widely known fact about Dolphus to everyone in Maycomb is that he is married to a black lady and has mixed children. In order to avoid most of the criticism and hate from other white people, he poses as a drunkard. This shows just how taboo it was for two people of different races to have relations with one another.

Mr. Ewell constantly harassed both Atticus and Tom's family, even after the trial. For example, he spits in Atticus' face when Atticus went to notify Tom's wife of his death, as well as when he followed Mrs. Robinson to her work along the road. His continued harassment of them is example enough of the things people did back then out of hate and prejudice.
